Part 3 - Working With Your Own Material
12. Iterate: Improve the Answer with Follow-Ups
Goal: Treat the first answer as a draft and refine it through conversation.
The biggest beginner mistake is starting a brand-new prompt when the first answer is nearly right. The AI remembers the current conversation, so you can just tell it what to change: 'make it shorter', 'more formal', 'add an example', 'remove the last point'.
Think of it as editing with a collaborator. Small, specific follow-ups get you to a great result faster than rewriting the whole request each time.
The Script (Template)
[After an answer] -> 'Good. Now change [X]: [make it shorter / add Y / fix the tone].'
Worked Example
You write
That summary is good, but make it one sentence and add the exact growth number for online orders.
AI replies (sample)
Overall sales rose 12%, driven by a 30% jump in online orders while in-store sales fell 5%.
Why it works
Because the AI still had the previous answer in context, a short follow-up reshaped it instantly - no need to repeat the source text.
Do & Avoid
Tips
- Refer to the previous answer ('that', 'the second point') - the AI remembers it.
- Change one thing at a time so you can see the effect of each tweak.
Common Mistakes
- Starting over when a one-line follow-up would have fixed it.
- Asking for ten changes at once and losing track of what improved.
Practice
- Take any answer and improve it with three separate follow-ups.
- Ask for a draft, then guide it to a final version using only short corrections.
